Christine E. Lynn

DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS

Christine E. Lynn serves as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the Lynn
Insurance Group of Boca Raton, founded by her late husband, Eugene M. Lynn; and as a trustee
of the philanthropic E.M. Lynn Foundation. Born in Denmark, she studied business and nursing
in Norway, and worked as a nurse in Oslo. She married Eugene Lynn, a Stetson University
alumnus, in 1980 and joined his family insurance business in 1981 as vice president for
administration.

In 1990, the Lynns contributed $3 million to Stetson University to acquire a former savings and
loan building, which is now the Eugene M. and Christine Lynn Business Center. After her
husband's death in November 1999, she gave another $10 million through the Foundation to
totally rebuild the facility and help move the School of Business Administration to a new level of
academic excellence. The Christine E. Lynn Business Education Center at the Stetson
University Center at Celebration also reflects her support of Stetson's quality business education.
A member of the Stetson University Board of Trustees since 1994, she is now vice chair.

In South Florida, the Lynns and the Lynn Foundation have been benefactors to Florida Atlantic
University, the University of Miami, and the College of Boca Raton, which was renamed Lynn
University in their honor in 1991. She is vitally interested in health care and they have provided
major gift funding for cancer and medical research centers; a nursing college and nursing
scholarships; and research and treatment for heart disease, spinal cord injuries, and orthopedic
trauma.

Medallion

The President's Medallion, worn at all official
academic occasions, was first used for the inauguration of
President John E. Johns in 1969. The medallion, cast in
silver, is the university seal embraced by a wreath of laurel.

Academic Attire

The traditional pageantry of an academic procession,
such as the one which opens today's commencement
exercises, is one of the impressive spectacles of our time.
The array of handsome gowns and vividly colored hoods
worn by the faculty and other officers of the university are
the symbols of scholarly attainment.

Gonfalons

Gonfalons are thought to have originated in Western
Europe during the middle ages, when such banners were
used as war flags. As early as the twelfth century, they were
used at state and religious ceremonies, and today are used in
the academic ceremonies of many colleges and universities.

Prominently featuring the University Seal and the
name of the respective college and school, our gonfalons are
richly hued in Stetson's colors of green and white, and
accented by a luminous gold. The stately Elizabeth Hall
cupola graces each gonfalon as a symbol of our heritage. The
student bearers are outstanding members of the graduating
class, who have been selected by their Deans for this honor.

The University Seal

The circular seal of Stetson University was first
adopted between 1889 and 1891, about the time the name
of the institution was changed from DeLand College to John
B. Stetson University. The Latin Motto, "Pro Deo et
Veritate," is translated "For God and Truth." The Lamp,
signifying the Light of Truth, rests on the Book of Wisdom.

Mace

Maces were originally war instruments, but from the
13th century have been carried by the sergeant-at-arms of
educational entities. The mace symbolizes the dignity and
authority of the president and the Board of Trustees.

Stetson's mace, designed by Episcopalian Canon
Edward Nason West of the Cathedral Church of St. John the
Divine, New York, was presented to President J. Ollie
Edmunds in 1956.

Heritage

Stetson University, Florida's first private university,
was founded in 1883 by Henry A. DeLand, a New York
philanthropist, as DeLand Academy. In 1887, the
Legislature of the State of Florida enacted the Charter of
DeLand University as an independent and autonomous
institution of higher learning. The university name was
changed in 1889 to honor John B. Stetson, the nationally
known hat manufacturer who gave generously of his time
and means to advance the quality and reputation of the
institution, and who served, with Mr. DeLand and others, as
a founding trustee of the university.

Stetson's first president, Dr. John F. Forbes, clearly
described the commitment to teaching, which has been a
hallmark of the university throughout its history:

"Buildings, libraries and apparatus are good and give
added power, but the vital contact of students with a
vigorous and stimulating mind and heart - this is the sine
qua non of a successful education... The most important
thing is to find men and women of large heart and mind, apt
to teach and full of enthusiasm and stimulating power... to
develop in the student the habit of independent judgment -
of investigating statements and principles for oneself, and
thus for oneself to discover their truth or falsity."

Today, Stetson University is a non-sectarian,
comprehensive, private university composed of individually
strong undergraduate programs in various colleges and
schools, and a selected group of academically distinctive
graduate, professional, and continuing education programs.
We seek academically talented individuals with leadership
potential and records of personal growth and community
service. We promote and support scholarly and creative
activity among students, faculty, and staff as a means to
enhance learning, teaching, and professional development,
and as a contribution to the broader base of knowledge.

Mission

Our mission at Stetson University is to provide an
excellent education in a creative community where learning
and values meet, and to foster in students the qualities of
mind and heart that will prepare them to reach their full
potential as informed citizens of local communities and the
world.

At Stetson, the art of teaching is practiced through
programs solidly grounded in a tradition of liberal learning
that stimulates critical thinking, imaginative inquiry,
creative expression, and lively intellectual debate. The art
of learning is enhanced through small interactive classes,
close student-faculty alliances, and collaborative approaches
that provide the foundation for rewarding careers and
advanced study in selective graduate and professional
programs. We embrace diverse methodologies to foster
effective communication, information and technological
literacy, and aesthetic appreciation. We encourage the
development of informed convictions, independent
judgment, and lifelong commitments to learning that are
characteristic features of the enlightened citizen. In
bringing together learning and values, the University
encourages all of its members to demonstrate personal
integrity; to develop an appreciation for the spiritual
dimension of life; to embrace leadership in an increasingly
complex, interdependent, and technological world; and to
commit to active forms of social responsibility.

Frances 'Dolly' Hand

DOCTOR OF ARTS & HUMANE LETTERS

Frances 'Dolly' Rutledge Hand, a Belle Glade business leader, is a 1949 graduate of the Stetson
University College of Law. The only woman in her class, she was, at age 20, the youngest student
ever to complete the law program. She and her husband, Homer Hand, own and operate Hand
Enterprises, the management company for their land holdings. She won Stetson University's
Distinguished Alumni Award in 1990, recognizing her significant professional achievement, and
in 2007 was inducted into the Stetson University College of Law Hall of Fame.

Active in civic and community programs, she has served on the Stetson University Board of
Trustees since 1994. She and her husband permanently endowed Stetson University's annual
Homer and Dolly Hand Awards for Excellence in Faculty Research. They also give to Stetson
University for student scholarships each year. Recently, the Hands donated the $1 million lead
gift to build the Homer and Dolly Hand Art Center near Sampson Hall. It will have two
galleries, one to exhibit rotating selections from Stetson University's extensive art collection by
Modernist painter Oscar Bluemner (1867-1938) and another to display other works from the
university's permanent collection or special shows. It will also offer a vault, preparation area and
an art study seminar room that can be used as a reception area as well.

A longtime member of the Palm Beach County and Florida Bar associations, she was a member of
the Palm Beach Community College Board of Trustees for 16 years and served as chair for two
years. In 1989 she was named Outstanding Trustee in the southeastern region by the Association
of Community College Trustees and also won the Bob Graham Distinguished Service Award.

Wayne W. Meisel

DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS

Wayne W. Meisel is the founding president of the Bonner Foundation, a national philanthropic
organization that focuses on anti-poverty issues by endowing and making grants to educational
institutions, local congregations, and faith-based coalitions. He helped inspire the late Corella
and Bertram F. Bonner to give more than $150 million to establish the Foundation in 1989 and
designed the service-based scholarship model that supports financially challenged students in
giving community service. Currently more than 2,500 students at 75 colleges and universities
each contribute up to 600 hours a year to their communities through the program.

With a bachelor's degree from Harvard University and a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton
Theological Seminary, he is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA). He
founded the Campus Outreach Opportunity League (COOL) in 1983 to build a student
community service program, and served as its executive director until 1989. In 1986, President
Ronald Reagan awarded the President's Volunteer Action Award to COOL, noting it was the
premier organization in the country for mobilizing volunteers.

Meisel was a founding board member of the Commission for National and Community Service
under President George H. Bush and one of the primary architects for the AmeriCorps Program, a
centerpiece of President Bill Clinton's national service initiatives. Author of two books, Building
a Movement: Students in Community Service and On Your Mark, Get Set, Go: From Student Ideas to
Campus Action, he has been featured in many national publications, including the New York
Times, The New Yorker, Christian Science Monitor, and Newsweek Magazine.

Honors Program

Founded in 1956, Stetson University's Honors Program is the oldest in the Southeast and one of the oldest in the
nation. Its mission is to provide "enriched and intellectually stimulating learning experiences for inquisitive and
motivated students." University Honors Program graduates must complete a rigorous sequence of courses in general
education, fulfill all requirements for a major (and often a second major or minor), write a personal credo, pass a
comprehensive oral examination, and maintain a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0. The Honors Program
has a long tradition of providing leaders to student government, campus media, and service organizations.

Graduation Pledge

Initiated by the Class of 2002

and the Student Government Association

Stetson University

This voluntary commitment is part of a national movement in which college graduates sign a pledge to "lead
responsible lives." Seniors who have signed the Stetson University pledge wear green and gold ribbons at
Commencement to indicate their intention to live thoughtfully and responsibly, drawing on values they have
developed here as they move forward in life and work:

I acknowledge the impact of my decisions on others, on society, and on the environment. As I graduate from
Stetson University and begin advanced study or my life's work, I pledge to consider the social, spiritual, and
environmental consequences of my actions. As I make daily choices, I will do my best to enhance the lives of
others, to deepen my understanding of the spiritual dimension of human life, and to demonstrate respect for the
natural world.
